Black bin and recycling

The perfect day out for truck-mad children with curious little brains is coming up this month! Chelmsford City Council's Recycling Open Day, happening on Saturday 18 February, will be full of heaps of free activities and displays to educate and amuse the whole family.

Fun for all

This is an opportunity to visit Chelmsford City Council's recycling and waste depot and discover everything you need to know about recycling in Chelmsford. The depot sorts all the materials that are collected from homes across Chelmsford.

There will be a variety of activities and displays to explore at this free family event, including:

  • Tours around the depot to view the recycling bays and vehicle workshops
  • A cinema experience
  • The opportunity to sit in our recycling and street care trucks
  • Quizzes and competitions
  • Community litter picking information and details on obtaining a free kit
  • A free 'Dr Bike' repair workshop. This is a fab opportunity if your bike needs some TLC for getting back on those cycle lanes this spring

Bike repair workshops

Any bikes needing a health check can be brought along to the Recycling Open Day and receive a basic service. If the team finds it's in need of attention, minor repairs can be carried out.

They will look at tyres, brakes, gears, cables, your chain, your pedals and steering, and can even replace cables and brake pads, fix punctures and realign gears. If any other issues are spotted, you'll be pointed in the right direction for further repairs.

For anyone wanting to learn more about looking after their bikes, there will be a 'learn the basic bike check' session at 11am and a 'how to fix a puncture session' at 1pm.
